Cruise the Cromford Canal On A Narrowboat
Located just across the road from the popular Cromford Mills on Mill Road in Cromford, Derbyshire. You’ll be able to slow the pace down a little and enjoy the peace and quiet of the Cromford Canal. Sit back and relax whilst the very quiet motor pushes forward on the Birdswood narrowboat. The boat and the gift shop is run entirely by volunteers.
The Birdswood is a historic narrowboat owned by the ‘Friends of Cromford Canal’. When you take a trip on the Birdswood you contributed to helping the Friends of Cromford Canal reach their goal of restoring and conserving the canal. So much work has already been done to get the canal looking the way it does today.
It’s a 2-hour cruise from Cromford Wharf to Leawood Pumphouse and back. There are refreshments available during the trip and even a loo should you drink too much tea. The ticket prices are reasonable with concessions for seniors and children. Dogs are also welcome.
You’ll find plenty of parking and also somewhere to eat at Wheatcroft’s Wharf Café.
You could travel back in time a little further and enjoy the experience of floating along the canal in a horse-drawn boat. It will cost you a little extra but the demand is high so it’s definitely worth you taking a look at the website. That said, it is probably worth booking ahead if you are coming from some distance away as that could save any disappointment.
If there’s a large group of you (up to 40) then it may well be worth thinking about chartering the narrowboat for a couple of hours. It’s only a phone call away.
Whilst visiting the shop to buy your tickets you’ll see postcards of what the canal used to look like and just how much work has gone into repairing the canal.
