Glossop Sailing Club

A sailing and windsurfing club in a beautiful environment with modern and spacious facilities and enthusiastic members

Glossop Sailing Club is a welcoming watersports club situated on Torside Reservoir. It’s opposite the Longdendale Trail. Further, Torside is the largest of Derbyshire’s reservoirs, surrounded by beautiful Peak District hills. With the prevailing westerly winds down its length, it is the perfect safe and exciting venue for sailing, windsurfing and paddle sports. Our season runs from Easter through to Christmas, with a regular calendar of events both mid-week and at weekends.

The club is an officially recognised RYA Training Centre, and our instructors run RYA courses. The courses are for both adult and junior novice and improver windsurfers and dinghy sailors. Also, for RYA Instructor qualifications for those wishing to volunteer or pursue careers in watersports.

Just so you know, we have a thriving adult dinghy sailing and windsurfing membership, with handicap racing on Wednesdays and Sundays. Allowing our novice helms to compete against the National, European and even Olympic sailors in our club. Families and social sailors enjoy our Saturday fun sessions. Whilst novices who take our courses can hire club equipment before investing in their own.

Our Juniors’ Club is hugely popular. With Friday night fun sessions, Saturday racing sessions, and a Summer School, all leading to RYA qualifications for both sailing and windsurfing. Several of our juniors are now competing in the national RYA Zone Squads. These feed into the Team GB Olympic Squad, and some have even made professional careers in their sport. Of equal importance is our nurturing social scene. We have a reputation as the friendliest club on the junior circuit!

We have recently expanded our activities to encourage the rapidly growing enthusiasm for paddle sports, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. Our members with those skills offer fun events and coaching sessions.

The Clubhouse

The clubhouse has hot showers and changing rooms, a bar, and a galley serving hot food on event days. The club is run entirely by its members, who share the duties throughout the year. We welcome volunteers to join our team and offer their expertise in any capacity. Running races, driving our safety boats, helping in the galley and bar. Becoming qualified to join our team of instructors, and as members of the Executive Committee who manage the business affairs of the club. Don’t worry if you’re not yet confident. We’ll train you! Many members came simply to enjoy time on the water, and are now a respected part of our lively social community.
